What is Roti?

Roti is an Indian flatbread recipe that is made with wholemeal wheat flour and pairs well with recipes such as tarka dhal, chicken saag curry, chana masala, and sweet potato and chickpea curry.

It’s often made every other day in Indian households across the world and there are many variations too.

Prep Roti

  • In a large mixing bowl, add 1/2 tsp of oil. and the whole wheat flour.
  • Gradually add water whilst mixing the flour with your hands.
  • Bring the dough together and knead for 3-5 minutes.
  • Add slightly more water and flour – depending on if sticky.
  • Once you feel the dough is smooth, cover with cloth for 30 minutes.

Cook Roti

  • Once fully rested and set, knead the dough for 1 minute.
  • Divide the dough, to around 40g per roti and roll into dough balls.
  • Add flour to the surface area.
  • Press the dough ball and use your hands to make it smooth and flat.
  • Drip in more flour and place on the surface area.
  • Use a rolling pin to roll the roti. You will likely need to add more flour to roti as you keep rolling.
  • Add the roti to a cast iron skillet on medium-high heat.
  • Cook for 1 minute each side until fully crisp.
  • Remove roti and apply ghee.
  • Serve.
