Naan bread is a popular recipe and restaurant appetizer you can make at home. It pairs well with Indian recipes such as tarka dhal, chicken saag curry, chana masala, and sweet potato and chickpea curry.
It’s often made every other day in Indian households worldwide and there are many variations too.

Naan Bread Recipe
Here is how to make restaurant-style naan bread at home with a handful of simple ingredients without the need to use a traditional tandoor.

- 300 g (2.4 cups) bread flour
- 2 tsp white sugar
- 30 g (1.1 oz) ghee
- 150 ml (5.1 floz) natural yogurt
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp (0.5 tsp) baking powder
- 1 tsp nigella seeds
- 1 bunch cilantro
- 2 tsp ghee for brush and mixing bowl
Instructions
- To a mixing bowl or cup, add the dried yeast, warm water, and 1 tsp sugar. Let it stand for 15 minutes.
- To a large mixing bowl, add the flour, 1 tsp of sugar, salt, and baking powder.
- Mix gentely and make a well in the middle.
- In the well, add the melted ghee, yeast mixture, natural yogurt, and nigella seeds.
- Stir to combine and use your hands to make a soft dough ball. This will take around 5 minutes.
- Once you have a soft dough ball, begin to knead for a further 5 to 8 minutes.
- To a large bowl, add the ghee and place the dough ball. Cover with a cloth and let it rest for 2 hours.
- After 2 hours, remove the cloth and divide the dough ball into 6 balls.
- For each ball, roll it out. You might need to use extra flour for surface area and for each dough ball too.
- Heat a cast iron skillet on medium-high heat.
- Add your naan and cook for 3 minutes on each side, or until it puffs up. It should look slightly charred.
- Brush the cooked naan with the ghee and cover in foil before serving.
Notes
- We highly recommend using a cast iron pan or skillet for the best results.
