
Cottage Pie Recipe
Cottage Pie is a traditional and comforting dish made with ground meat and vegetables, topped with mashed potatoes. It's a perfect dish for a cozy family dinner and it's easy to make. Try making it now for a delicious and satisfying weekend dinner!
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1.25 kg (5.5 cups) beef mince
- 2 onions finely chopped
- 3 carrots chopped
- 3 celery sticks chopped
- 4 garlic cloves finely chopped
- 3 tbsp plain flour
- 1 tbsp tomato purée
- 1 glass red wine
- 800 ml (3.3 cups) beef stock
- 3 tbsp worcestershire sauce
- 2 bay leaves
Instructions
Mince
- Heat extra virgin olive oil in a saucepan and cook beef mince on medium-high heat until browned. Set aside.
- Add extra virgin olive oil to the pan, add onions, carrots, and celery. Cook for around 15 minutes and continuously stir, until soft.
- Add garlic cloves, flour, tomato puree, and cooked beef mince to the pan.
- Pour in a glass of red wine and let it reduce slightly.
- Add beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and bay leaves
- Reduce heat and cook for 45 minutes or until the gravy is thick.
- Season to taste and discard bay leaves.
Mash
- Peel and chop potatoes, boil in salted water until tender.
- Drain, steam dry, and mash with milk, butter, and cheddar cheese.
Combine
- Spoon the meat into an ovenproof dish and spoon the mashed potatoes on top, and sprinkle with the remaining cheese.
- Heat oven to 440F (220C) and cook for 30 minutes or until golden.
